The Telecom Sector has
received national recognition as the key
driver for development and growth. Today, India’s
telecom network with about 210 million telephones
is one of the largest in the World and second
largest among the emerging economies of Asia.
We have been able to provide 70 million connections in
the year 2006- 07, an increase of 66% over the
additions provided in 2005-06. After the
announcement of Broadband Policy in October
2004, about 2.5 million connections have been
provided in more than 900 towns in the country.
The Indian Telecom sector has witnessed dramatic
transformation on almost all the fronts. While
monopoly has given place to competitive regime
with multiple players, tariffs have been
reduced drastically (from Rs.30 per minute for long
distance service to Rs. 1/- per minute
(One India Plan). The share of private sector has
increased to more than 66%
and the contribution of mobile telephony has gone upto 80%.
The performance of telecom sector has been widely
acclaimed. However, we have to travel many more miles
to catch up with the developed countries. Therefore,
we have set for ourselves an ambitious target of
500 million telephones by end of 2010 and broadband
connectivity to 20 million subscribers by end 2010.
More than 13 lakh rural DELs have been provided in 1685
commercially unviable SDCAs with support from USOF.
While we are expanding at
a fast pace, we are also making all efforts to provide
world class Quality of Service. TRAI is regularly
monitoring the Quality of Service for all operators.
We are also getting extra spectrum allocated for
providing it to mobile service for easing the congestion
in mobile network.
