The bids for the Radio Paging Service in 27 cities were invited in 1992, the licenses were signed in 1994 and the service was commissioned in 1995.   There was a provision for a fixed license fee for first 3 years and review of the license fee afterwards.

       The bids for 19 telecom circles excluding the areas covered by the 27 cities were invited in 1994 with 4 licenses for 10 years in each circle having a fixed license fee for the entire period.  The paging service in the circles was commenced in 1996. 


      The license fee for the 4th and 5th year was fixed in consultation with TRAI as 5% of the gross revenue for the city paging. The WPC charges of Rs.100/- per subscriber / annum with regard to radio paging service have been removed w.e.f. August 1, 1999. The customs duty on pagers was reduced to 5% w.e.f. September 1, 2000. 95 licenses were issued and implemented.
